Legend has it that pirates would lie in wait behind the barrier island, hiding their ships in the calm waters of New Topsail Inlet. Merchant ships sailing up and down the East Coast thought they were in the clear—until suddenly, a ship’s top sail peeked up over the dunes or trees like a shark’s fin. By the time the merchants spotted it, the pirates were already on them like barnacles on a hull. So, the theory goes, "Topsail" got its name because of these sneaky sails popping up over the horizon. It became a warning, a word that stirred fear: “Watch for the topsail—pirates could be near!” Sure, it might sound a little Hollywood now, but back then, it was dead serious. And the best part? Some say the name stuck. Officially? It's named after New Topsail Inlet.
