Local Community Shocked by Early Morning Shooting in Surf City
Surf City, NC – Our close-knit Topsail Island community was shaken early Sunday morning, June 23, by a shooting incident in Surf City that left two of our neighbors injured. The Surf City Police Department has identified 21-year-old Devon Nikoli Veronesi, of Holly Ridge, as the suspect in this alarming event.
Incident Details
Around 12:05 a.m., the SCPD responded to a distressing "shots fired" call. The incident took place at a residence near the intersection of Pender Avenue and North Topsail Drive. According to police, a heated altercation among several individuals at the home escalated when Veronesi allegedly fired a gun into the residence.
Injuries and Medical Response
In this terrifying moment, a woman was struck in the leg, and a man was hit in the hand. Both victims were quickly transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center by our diligent EMS teams for necessary medical treatment.
Suspect in Custody
Veronesi, who had active warrants for possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, was apprehended by law enforcement Sunday night. The swift action of our local police has ensured that he is now in custody.

In a statement from the SCPD, a spokesperson emphasized that this was an isolated incident, reassuring us all that there is no ongoing threat to our peaceful community. The investigation, however, continues as we seek to understand the full details of what transpired.
